Dog Walking

I wanted to think about what was going to happen in my next Lola book, so I took my two golden retrievers for a walk. Walking my girls, Sugar and Maizy, helps me think. Or not think.

They’re not thinking too much, as far as I can tell, except about what is right in front of them. They walk side by side, staring straight ahead, except when they smell something interesting off to the side. Then they suddenly stop and sniff. Sometimes they squat, and it reminds me of a curtsy.

We walked down North Avenue while cars zoomed past, most of them driving twice the speed limit. The dogs didn’t care. Side by side. Sniff.  Squat. Move on.
